What is a Healthy Breakfast?
Breakfast is a great way to jump start your energy for the day. It can be a powerhouse of nutrients to fuel your brain and body for all the things you have to do!
Since breakfast is one of the 3 meals you get to eat during the day, make it nutritious. Choosing whole foods as much a possible will pack in the nutrients. Staying away from breakfast cereal and other processed foods like granola bars, orange juice and cereal bars can help keep you on the right track. Instant oatmeal isn’t a great choice due to the large amounts of added sugar and artificial flavors.
So what to eat?
The first step is to determine how much time you have. Are you a grab and go to eat at work? Do you have a few minutes to eat after the kids are on the bus? Does the long commute crunch your morning? Once you realize what is realistic then you can adapt to your lifestyle.
For those that have the grab and go mornings, preparing an overnight oat recipe to eat at your desk can give you a nourishing meal to power you through the morning. For the long commuter, a satisfying smoothie can bring in great protein and vitamins to keep you alert. Someone that has more time, cooking so eggs with leftover veggies can be satisfying and nutritious for all those morning chores.
Making sure your meal has adequate fat, protein and slow burning carbs is a good recipe for success. For smoothie ideas, see the blog article on making nutritious smoothies. Eggs are a combination of protein and fat. Vegetables, fruits and whole grains such as oats are good sources of slow burning carbs that won’t spike blood sugar leading the the hangry feeling at 10 AM.
A note on bread, try choosing one with the least amount of ingredients possible. Lots of commercial breads have many preservatives that can negatively impact health. Try an organic brand, one made with all sprouted grains or a local true sourdough.
