What makes a nutritious smoothie?

Smoothies can make great snacks or even meals. They are portable and can be made very quickly!

A nutritious smoothie starts with some sort of protein. This could be in the form of protein powder, either whey or plant-based, yogurt, cottage cheese, or milk.

Then add some fruit or vegetables, frozen adds a nice texture. They add sweetness or added vitamins and minerals.

The liquid portion can be milk, plant-based milk like almond milk or even water.

You can also add a fat source for more nutrition and satisfaction. Good sources are avocado, chia seeds, nut butter, or a plant based fat such as olive, coconut or avocado oil.

If you are having a smoothie as a snack, you can use just a protein source and fruit. This will make the smoothie around 150 calories and will be an additional source of fuel for the day.

If your smoothie is a meal, then make sure it has enough calories to sustain you. Use a protein source, fruit or vegetables (or both!), some liquid and a fat source. Make sure it is around 400 calories at least for a meal.

Lastly, having a good blender can make all the difference. Find a good one that you like and invest in yourself.

Enjoy this healthy smoothie that makes for a great meal!
